Geranium Rose Compound There has been much confusion about the term "Geranium Rose" and so I wanted to take a moment to hopefully clarify the situation. Technically, this term is inappropriate to describe the essential oil of geranium but nonetheless is used. When your talking about true essential oils, there is Geranium oil and then there is Rose oil, the two should not be confused and the terms really should not be combined together. Most typically it is used to refer to a common compound (a blended product) sold by many of the larger companies. For example, the Geranium (Rose) Egyptian compound, while it does contain some natural geranium oil, is typically blended with other rose type aromachemicals. This is how the product can be made available at such a low price and why its used by soap makers everywhere. The problem arises when companies fail to tell you that this is not a pure essential oil but a compound (a blend of natural and synthetic). In fact, most companies who sell this are selling it as an essential oil, but we refuse to conform to the trend and will not call this an essential oil, even though it is sold to us as such. I can prove its not an essential oil because the analysis is quite obvious, even to the novice essential oil chemist. This is not to say that there is no such thing as true geranium oil from Egypt, of course there is, but this product should be denoted as simply "Geranium oil, Egyptian" and should be the steam distilled oil from Pelargoneum graveolens. The matter becomes even more confusing due to people using the term "Rose Geranium" oil to refer to the oil coming from Pelargonium roseum which comes from Madagascar (and a few other places) and is chemically very similar to P. graveolens but typically has a slightly rosier scent. If your still confused then you can always let price give you some indication as to what you are dealing with. True geranium oil (non-certified organic) in bulk drum quantities typically will fluctuate from $25 - $50/lb ($55-$110/kg) direct from source, depending on quality, country of origin and currently market conditions. So when you see a company selling bulk geranium oil in the $15 - $25/lb range you know that it cannot possibly be pure geranium oil, especially when the company selling the oil is buying in less than drum quantities from larger company who may or may not have bought it direct from source. We are sorry for any confusion concerning this product prior to this page being made available but we have tried to be up front about what it actually is and if you note we do not associate a Latin botanical name with the item and it is not a part of our essential oils list and is only available from the Bulk Specials List. Furthermore, when you click on the price to add it to your shopping cart it clearly states "Geranium Rose Compound." We originally did not carry this product but there is such a demand for it and so many people have been comparing our price for true geranium oil to the price that other companies are charging for this compound that we were forced to add it to our line and educate people as to what it actually is. We could even sell much more of it if we did business like most companies and called this product an essential oil instead of what it really is, a compound. I hope this clears things up a bit concerning this product as well as geranium products in general and if you have any further questions feel free to use the contact form to email me.
